Elections
Elections are a vital part of citizenship and self-governance at the Native Village of Eyak. Through Tribal elections, enrolled citizens have the opportunity to choose their leadership, uphold Tribal sovereignty, and participate directly in the future of our government.
NVE elections are conducted in accordance with the Tribe’s Election Code and Constitution (Article 10), which establish the process for fair, transparent, and accountable governance. Elections ensure that the Tribal Council remains representative of the community and grounded in the voice and priorities of Tribal members.
Voting is both a right and a responsibility of Tribal citizenship. To participate in NVE elections, voters must be enrolled Tribal Members, at least 18 years of age, and meet the Tribe’s residency requirements. All elections are conducted by secret ballot to protect voter privacy and ensure integrity in the process.
For an election to be considered valid, a minimum of 20% voter participation is required. This reflects the importance of community involvement and shared responsibility in Tribal governance. An Election Committee is appointed annually to oversee the administration of elections, support fair procedures, and uphold the Election Code.
